No wicket in all of cricket is valued more highly than the wicket that a batsman takes. The massive, broad-shouldered Goliath of the South African team, Jacques Kallis, instills fear in some but calms others with his imposing presence.
There aren’t many contemporary players who more closely resemble the archetypal cricket player. Kallis is a powerful and skillful batsman who possesses an unwavering technique and an unwavering focus. Even though his bowling contribution is decreasing with each season, he will always be regarded as a connoisseur of uncomfortable bounce, occasionally startling pace, and swing. His steady hand and lightning-fast reactions make absurd catches appear normal in the slips.

In his sixth Test match, the drawn Boxing Day match in Melbourne in 1997, Kallis made his international batsman debut with a battling 101 on a tired final-day surface. He had virtually salvaged the match for South Africa before Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath could move him.
Over the years, Kallis has contributed numerous such innings, demonstrating that for a South African side that still feels more at ease on the field and with its fast bowlers firing than as a batting unit, grit is a far more valuable asset than glitz. Kallis has voluntarily taken on the position of the pivot around which the wheel must attempt to revolve. However, on rare occasions, he has revealed a  startling aggression that hints at what might have been.
Certainly, his lofted drive, which begins with a menacing backlift before uncoiling into the irresistible momentum of a mighty downward swoop of the bat and finishing in a twirl of Baroque, might be described as Mozart in motion. In the lightning flash of that fleeting instant it really does seem as if Kallis could, in the words of one observer, hit a six whenever he felt like it.

His detractors, especially those with a scant knowledge of the South African team’s dynamics, charge him with not taking the match situation into consideration when he organizes his innings, not dominating attacks that he has already ground to dust, and needlessly slow scoring. Which is paradoxical because Kallis’s teammates attest to the fact that he prioritizes his team over his personal goals, which is why he bats the way he does. All of this suggests selfishness. That’s the only method he is aware of.
